Arthritis

A medical term for “Joint Swelling”. One of the most common forms is referred to as Osteoarthritis (OA). OA is characterized by the wear and subsequent loss of cartilage which typically cushions the bone ends inside a joint. There are 4 recognized stages of OA.

Stage I is characterized by minor wear and tear and tends to be less painful.

Stage II wear of the cartilage is Mild but becomes more noticeable on diagnostic imaging like an X-Ray and often causes stiffness during the beginning of activity.

Stage III the cartilage in the affected area begins to erode. The joint becomes swollen and often regular daily activities can become painful.

Stage IV is noted to be very painful and characterized by a swollen joint which has significant cartilage loss and often bony spurs called “osteophytes” are present.

It is understood that OA is a progressive disease which is best managed early. The result of an unchecked progression of Arthritis is often painful loss of joint motion, muscle weakness, and difficulty performing normal activities of Daily Life.
