Newcastle Village Physiotherapy is proudly associated with the best Pelvic Health Clinic in our region (if not our Province). We consider ourselves very lucky to be able to offer the professional services of the Durham Pelvic Health Specialists. Our clinicians are trained to assess and treat the cause of why incontinence is occurring. They use a combination of exercise, hands on treatment, behaviour modification, education, biofeedback and neuromuscular stimulation.

Urinary incontinence affects 1 in 3 women and 1 in 9 men. It is the unwanted leaking of urine and there are 3 main types. Stress incontinence is when urinary leakage happens during activities such running, jumping or coughing. Urge incontinence happens when you feel a strong urge to void such as with running water, walking by the bathroom or driving into your driveway and finally Mixed incontinence which is a combination of both stress and urge incontinence.

Women can experience this during her reproductive years or during perimenopause and menopause. During this later stage, there is a change in hormones which can affect tissue health and lead to weakness and changes to the tissues due to estrogen loss. Sometimes women may have experience symptoms related to genitourinary syndrome of menopause (GSM).

Men can have urinary incontinence especially if they have had prostate surgery. Our pelvic physiotherapists are trained to work with men to help control leakage, post void dribble, increased urinary frequency/urgency and getting up multiple times to use the facilities. Our clinic has a pre and post prostate physiotherapy program to improve post surgical outcomes.

The physiotherapy approach at Durham Pelvic Health always involves a comprehensive physical assessment by the most experienced team of Physiotherapists in the Durham and Clarington area.

Once assessed an individualized plan will be created just for you. Together we will work as a team to treat the source of your incontinence. Re-strengthening and restoring the natural balance of the body are essential to a full and safe recovery.
